Last week a rare bottle of 60-year-old Macallan whisky called the ‘Holy Grail of Single Malt’ set a record at auction when a bottle sold for more than $1.1 million, but that’s got nothing on the scorpion venom.
There are some truly expensive liquids on this planet. A gallon of Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) will set you back $123K. One gallon of Chanel No. 5 perfume will retail for $26,000. A gallon of horseshoe crab blood is worth $60,000/gallon. Insulin, the lifeblood of diabetics, is valued somewhere around $9,400-per-gallon. When measured by cost-per-gallon, however, nothing compares to scorpion venom.
Scorpion venom is worth a whopping $39,000,000 per gallon. Second on this planet is King Cobra Venom at $153,000/gallon and that should give you an inkling of what makes scorpion venom so damn expensive. I’ve only encountered two scorpions in the wild in my lifetime. I live in Florida and they aren’t super common here. But I’m pretty sure I’d have paid a little more attention had I known that scorpion venom was worth a goddamn $39 million/gallon.

It kind of makes you wonder what the cheap ass scorpion rum you see in Guatemala and Belize is so cheap when they’re holding the elixir of the gods, right?
Sure, you’d have to milk that single scorpion inside of the rum bottle 2.64 MILLION times in order to pull out a gallon worth the $39,000,000 but that would totally be worth it, right? Right.

It’s pretty damn amazing that unlike most venoms/anti-venoms, scorpion venom actually has a literal metric shit ton of medical benefits beyond just treating stings. It sounds to me like we all need to go in on a scorpion farm and start milking the shit out of these little buggers.
